Battery Storage FAQs

What does "usable capacity" mean for a battery, and why does it matter?

Usable capacity is the portion of a battery's rated capacity you can actually draw down safely (depth of discharge). LiFePO4 batteries typically allow deeper discharge than lead-acid, so comparing usable capacity, not just rated capacity, gives a more accurate runtime estimate.

Why do some batteries cost more per kWh than others?

Compare price per kWh of stored energy (voltage x Ah), not per Ah, because a 48V 100Ah battery holds about four times the energy of a 12V 100Ah unit. Differences usually come down to chemistry (LiFePO4 vs. lead-acid), cycle life, built-in BMS quality, and warranty length. A higher upfront cost can still be the better value if it means significantly more usable cycles.

Do I need a separate BMS if the battery already has one built in?

Most LiFePO4 batteries include an internal BMS for cell balancing and protection. Confirm this in the listed specifications before assuming you need a separate external BMS.
